Are You a Sales Clone: and becoming a sales clown?

Standard

The biggest mistake sales people make

Is trying to sell like someone else.

OK, so you get into sales or management of some kind and decide to read a ton of books and look at videos on YouTube and join groups and so one and so one. You go to seminars where they force feed you BS lines to say. Little by little you try to fit the mold of what a salesperson should be and yet… you are having no real success.

There is one simple reason for this. Almost everything out there is a cookie cutter strategy that tries to make you fit into a certain personality type. Confident, powerful, leader, strong, outgoing, blah blah blah…

Even though you try all those things it just does not seem to fit. You feel fake and like someone will find out that you are not the person you are pretending to be. Either that or you completely change your personality and still are not making money.

The problem is that most people don’t know how to teach you to sell because all they have is that one cookie cutter idea of what it takes to sell. I am talking about sales managers, sales trainers and anyone trying to give you advice about how to be more like what they think is needed.  They have nothing else so they try and force you into that mold even if it is uncomfortable for you. They think they can turn you into a sales clone.

The truth is this.

Your personality is just fine. You can be yourself and be even more persuasive that the best super confident powerful sales clone.

When we do sales coaching the biggest challenge I have is getting these clones to stop trying to be someone they are not and just be themselves. You can’t imagine how much they relax once they do this one thing.

Then you create a sales strategy to fit your personality instead of trying to make you change to fit a cookie cutter strategy. If you have a gentle personality you can’t sell like someone loud. If you are soft spoken then being overpowering is not going to work for you. If you are already outgoing then being MORE outgoing is not going to help. There are even differences between how men and women sell.

Just think about this for a minute.

You can relax and just be yourself when talking to people.

You don’t have to feel like a phony

You capitalize on the strengths you naturally already have

Finally…. you get what you want.

This applies to selling, management, socializing and even dating.

Step two ask questions about what is not working for you
Step three follow directions and test what is offered

Step four get feedback and make adjustments

We have found one thing to be true. You are the most persuasive when it doesn’t sound like you are persuading. That means never sound like a salesperson. Never close. Never use trite BS lines from 1950.

Just be yourself and learn conversational selling with you own real personality.
